Yak Trowel
Poo be Gone
Always Bring a Bathroom Kit
This is usually a gallon plastic bag with everything you need to successfully poop in the backcountry:
Come prepared with 1) a trowel, 2) hand soap or hand sanitizer, 3) toilet paper, and 4) plenty of disposable storage bags. This kit should come with you on every bikepacking or hiking trip
Key Guidelines for Waste Disposal
The Cat Hole Method: Use a trowel to dig a hole 6-8 inches deep and 4-6 inches in diameter.
Location: Always ensure the hole is at least 200 feet from water, trails, and camp to prevent contamination.
Closing the Hole: After use, bury the waste completely with the original soil and disguise the spot with natural materials like leaves or rocks.
Packing Out Paper: Do not burn or bury toilet paper, as it does not decompose quickly and can be dug up by animals. Pack out used TP in a dedicated, sealed bag.
Wipes: Never bury wipes, even if they are labeled "biodegradable".
When to Pack Out (WAG Bags): In areas with limited soil (desert, alpine), high-use, or specific regulations, you must use a WAG bag (Waste Alleviation and Gelling) or similar container to pack out all waste.
Exceptions: If a backcountry privy is available, use it.
Urination: Urinate away from water sources and, if possible, on rocks rather than plants, as animals may destroy vegetation for the salt.
